Griffiths spearheads new venture

Former Wales defence coach Clive Griffiths has been appointed as head coach of the North Wales development side, and the proposal for international Canadian players to boost the side's profile and performance levels has been agreed by Rugby Canada.
Griffiths, who worked alongside Mike Ruddock in Wales’ 2005 Grand Slam season, and helped Ruddock’s Worcester side reach the European Challenge Cup final in 2008, has been appointed for a period of five months and will select and coach the new side through a series of competitive matches, with Parc Eirias, Colwyn Bay already confirmed as their home venue in a partnership with Conwy County Borough Council.

Ten international Canadian players will arrive in North Wales on January 7 in a move aimed to boost the standards and profile of the North Wales representative team, while providing competitive rugby for the elite, young Canadians.

In a second high profile appointment for the North Wales set-up, former Gloucester skills and conditioning coach Rudi Meir has been appointed as skills and conditioning coach for the side and will put a performance process and infrastructure management into place. Current North Wales coach John Aby will take up a role as one of the assistant coaches to the new-look team.

Griffiths will now set out a selection process for the remainder of the Gogledd Cymru team in order to mould the Welsh qualified and Canadian players into an effective playing unit.

Nine fixtures have been confirmed for the side, beginning with a Leicester Tigers Development XV at Parc Eirias on Friday 15 January. The full fixture list will be finalised later this month.

The North Wales strategic plan includes the establishment of a North Wales academy which will be run by North Wales Performance and Development manager Marc Roberts with the support of Coleg Llandrillo and Rydal School who will provide an integrated academic and rugby programme. The academy will be based at Parc Eirias as part of Conwy Council’s multi-million pound redevelopment of the site.

The ambition is to work in a real partnership with Canadian rugby to further develop their players whilst simultaneously developing rugby in North Wales.

In the fullness of time as the North Wales academy system begins to produce appropriate Welsh players, the way forward will be reviewed together with our Canadian colleagues.

Griffiths said, “This appointment is an exciting challenge for me. North Wales is an untapped source of rugby talent and I hope I can help bring that to the fore. A number of people have been campaigning for years to raise the profile of rugby in North Wales and we can make that a reality if we all pull in the same direction.

“There is always a lot of work to be done to gel a team and this situation is no different. We have some time now to select a group of players from North Wales and then build our game plan around the combined group of Canadian and North Wales players. I’m sure it will be a steep learning curve in the first few weeks and the door won’t be shut on squad inclusion by any means. Hopefully we will help to raise the standard of club rugby in North Wales by creating a sense of competition for places in the side.”

WRU Head of Rugby Development and Performance Joe Lydon said, “Clive Griffiths has a huge amount of professional experience at the highest level and is ideally placed to pull together a team of this nature. Rudi Meir is also highly experienced in his field and I’m sure their knowledge and expertise will rub off on upcoming North Wales coaches and players.

“The inclusion of ten Canadian players in the squad will help to raise the standards and profile of the North Wales side on and off the field and help to give North Wales a competitive, semi-professional side almost immediately. It will enable attractive fixtures to take place at Parc Eirias, which will hopefully help to increase the interest and participation levels in rugby in North Wales. The Canadian players will also be working with WRU Development Officers during their time here to help promote and develop the community game in north Wales.

"Our aim throughout this is to raise the standard of rugby players in North Wales for the long term and the establishment of an academy in North Wales will help to identify and nurture that talent for the future, while at the same time, the players will be exposed to a high standard of competitive rugby.”

Kenton Morgan, Chair, Rygbi Gogledd Cymru said, "Clive, Rudi, Jon and ten Canadians add substance to Rygbi Gogledd Cymru's ambition to be the best. This innovative development is the "step up" in infrastructure and performance we need on the field. Our challenge is sustainability. This is a unique opportunity for the north Wales rugby community to show the passion and resources needed to allow us grow to occupy our rightful place in Welsh rugby. "

WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis added, “Rugby is the national sport of Wales. It defines us as a nation. The North Wales rugby strategy is vitally important not only for our rugby development but also for the unity of Wales. These announcements are a clear indication of the desire to maximise the development of all players, coaches and match officials from North Wales as outlined in the WRU strategic plan."

Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, Leader of Conwy County Borough Council said, “We are delighted to welcome the Canadian team to Colwyn Bay and hope that this will be a great boost for rugby in North Wales. We’re particularly eager to see more young people participating in sport and we believe that bringing these Canadian players to the area will inspire and encourage the region’s youngsters. The North Wales authorities will work closely to ensure that any regeneration and economic opportunities that arise from this scheme can benefit the whole region.”

Rugby Canada CEO Graham Brown calls the move for the ten Canadian players to play in Wales a significant step forward in providing elite level competition as well as elite player development.

“Providing elite competition and training environments for our best players has always been a goal for Rugby Canada. Providing opportunities for players to become professionals, while continuing to provide high level domestic training environments for those not playing professionally overseas, through our partnership with PISE (Pacific Institute of Sport Excellence) achieves our goal. The North Wales project is one part of our development program and a significant partnership for Rugby Canada,” said Brown from Rugby Canada’s Toronto headquarters.

U14 SQUAD SELECTION

For those who missed Friday night’s session, all present were informed that following the first round of matches the squad was to be reduced from 33 to 22.

The squad has been chosen and is based around the players that both the Provincial and WRU coaching staff believe, have the best chance now or in the future of making the Gogledd Cymru U15 squad.

These players are bolstered by 7 development players who in the opinion of the staff have the raw ability to progress to take their case forward for inclusion.

For those not selected we promise you that the decisions were not taking lightly, especially with all players making such vast improvements over a short period, we also ensure you of the following.

•We will run a continued revolving open door policy (if your good enough you’re in)
•We expect continued feedback from your club with reference to your playing and training
•You will be given areas to improve on to enhance your reselection chance
•GCS representatives will be watching both club and school games for promising players.
•You will be called back to the Development day on February 28th for re-evaluation.

Again we thank all of you for the commitment shown now and in the future for your ongoing rugby development within the Gogledd Cymru set up.

Player Improvement

The coaching staff at GCS feel that players that do not play club rugby on a regular basis are putting themselves at a disadvantage.

While we can not promote any one club there are teams based at many clubs within our provincial set up and we ask if you are not playing at a club please register at the one nearest you.

GCW v GCS

Yesterday saw the second game of the provincial series with the South taking on the West at Bangor RFC. Despite the squads being depleted due to illness, all 3 ages showed a massive improvement from the first game against the East. The U12’s struggled against a much larger West team, but showed glimpses of their potential with tries from Blayne Robinson (Newtown) and Andrew Williams (Bro Ffestiniog). The U13 put up a heroic display, with the depleted squad playing the majority of the rugby and always looking in control during the game. They gave their all to the cause, but with the West able to bring on so many fresh players, they were able to score at the very end to make the score 26-27 to the West. The U14 continued their winning streak with a comprehensive 6 tries to 3 win against the West. They showed a massive improvement from their last game, with some great individual performances. Dewi Bowen (Newtown) and Joe Mills (Llanidloes) were back to their rampaging best while Dave Carter (Harlech) looked lethal every time he had the ball.

Next Sunday see’s the U14 take on the best in Wales at the National U14’s 10’s Tournament at Abercynon, but they can travel with plenty of confidence.

Gogledd Cymru v Ospreys

Gogs U 18 take on strong Ospreys side on Sunday
Gogledd Cymru Under 18s play their first home-game of the Regional Age-Grade Championship this Sunday 13th Sepember when they face the Neath/Swansea Ospreys at Colwyn Bay Rugby Club K O 2pm. The North Wales youngsters will be looking to use the game to kick-start their campaign, having suffered a heavy 41-0 defeat away to the Scarlets in their opening match of the championship. A game in which they did not play well and from which hopefully they will have learnt much. Unfortunately it does not promise to get any easier against an Ospreys squad which contains within it a large number of internationals, including Tom Prydie, who the Ospreys management have already said they envisage playing for their senior side before the end of the season. However last seasons home match against the Ospreys was probably the Gogledd Cymru Under 18 Teams most competitive performance of the season, and there is no doubt that Head Coach Les Byrne will be looking for a similar effort on Sunday. The Gogledd Cymru squad will be announced after Wednesday nights training session in Ruthin- Kick off is 2pm and hopefully there will be a large crowd to urge the Gogledd Cymru side on

Major Initiatives for North Wales Rugby

The Welsh Rugby Union has announced a series of major initiatives aimed at the continued development of the game in North Wales in line with the strategic plan for the area as a development Region. The proposals include launching a North Wales Rugby Academy and an innovative plan to introduce Rugby Canada international players to the development region's representative team. The WRU has been working with partners including Rugby Canada and the IRB, and subject to approval from the Board of Rugby Canada next month, this proposal will be launched in January 2010.The Board of the Welsh Rugby Union has also awarded club status to the Gogledd Cymru representative team in order to allow the side to develop strategically within the governance of the WRU.Under the WRU and Rugby Canada initiative, it is proposed that a number of players, funded by Canada, will be based in north Wales to play for the region. They will form the basis of the representative squad which will be completed with individuals from within north Wales. The scheme is projected to last for up to five years and the number of Canadians in north Wales will be reduced year on year as the academy system delivers more quality players into the north Wales system. The initiative is designed to offer the north Wales team an opportunity to compete for a chance to achieve Premiership status within a realistic time-scale.The plan is linked to existing developments which include the identification of Parc Eirias in Colwyn Bay as the home base of the club with the full support of Conwy County Borough Council. It will also be the home of the new North Wales Rugby Academy.A non-profitable Cooperative Community Interest Company has been established to maximise financial and operational support for the development of representative rugby. The North Wales Rugby Academy will provide a focus for a sustainable pathway for players and coaches in north Wales which builds on existing development programmes within the region. That means the major areas of player development including all technical, tactical, psychological, physical and lifestyle support will be fully available and operational within the North Wales Rugby Academy programme. The Welsh Rugby Union has described the initiatives as a clear indication of the desire to maximise the development of all players, coaches and match officials from North Wales as outlined in the WRU strategic plan. The Rugby Canada Board meets in September where the financial aspects of the initiative to bring Canadian internationals to Wales will be looked at in depth. The scheme is also seen as a means to help Rugby Canada utilise the WRU structure to develop its own current international player base.WRU Head of Rugby, Performance and Development Joe Lydon said, "These measures have been put in place in order to accelerate the progression of Rygbi Gogledd Cymru as a team, and the identification and development of rugby in North Wales."Bringing young, Canadian squad players to North Wales will enable the north Wales team to be a competitive, semi-professional level side almost immediately. It will enable attractive fixtures to take place at Parc Eirias, which will hopefully help to increase the interest and participation levels in rugby in North Wales."Our aim throughout this is to raise the standard of rugby players in north Wales for the long term and the establishment of an academy in north Wales will help to identify and nurture that talent for the future, while at the same time, they will be exposed to a high standard of competitive rugby."There will also be a clear benefit to Canada, a development rugby nation."Peredur Jenkins, WRU Board member for north Wales said:"The north Wales rugby community welcomes these exciting and innovative plans. They will provide an opportunity for north Wales based players to achieve their full potential within the region. The flow of players from this region to the national teams at all levels will undoubtedly increase. These developments are the result of a close working partnership between the WRU, North Wales Rugby Council, Conwy Borough County Council and the Gogledd Cymru CIC - all parties striving to fulfill the strategies and goals of the WRU's Strategic Plan for North Wales."WRU Group Chief Executive Roger Lewis said "Rugby is the national sport of Wales. It defines us as a nation. The strategy for Rygbi Gogledd Cymru is vitally important not only for our rugby development but also for the unity of Wales."Rygbi Gogledd Cymru chairman Kenton Morgan said: "Being recognised as a club is another step in our implementation of the WRU strategic plan."Conwy County Borough Council's support in the development of Parc Eirias and the consequent regeneration potential for Colwyn Bay has been of tremendous benefit to this relationship. This new WRU plan fits our innovative approach to the progression of north Wales rugby and dovetails the needs of Gogledd Cymru with those of Rugby Canada."Canadian players will benefit massively from these high quality fixtures and the rugby culture of the region, which although less well recognised, is just as passionate, as that in other areas of Wales. They will be young men, away from home and we look forward to welcoming them into the team and to facilitating mutual rugby development and friendships."Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, Leader, Conwy County Borough Council said, "This is a very exciting announcement for rugby in north Wales. We are delighted to be part of the project and we believe it will help to inspire and encourage more young people to participate and will help develop the sport in the region."IRB Head of Development and Performance Mark Egan said, "This is an excellent initiative which will offer young players from both nations the opportunity to achieve their full potential and, if approved in full, will clearly benefit rugby in both Wales and Canada."Geraint John, High Performance Director, Rugby Canada said, "We are excited and hopeful this project will be able to proceed because of the clear benefits it will deliver to both Wales and Canada by helping to develop our young players."

Scarlets in Newtown/Bala

Hundreds of youngsters turned out to play rugby with their Scarlets heroes as Newtown RFC played host to the Scarlets squad at their home ground in Powys today (Fri).

The full Scarlets squad were given a warm welcome by a big crowd of members of rugby club as the players took the time to assist with a skills and training session with the junior section.

More than 100 young players aged between six and 16 were joined by Scarlets stars such as Mark Jones, David Lyons, Jonathan Davies, Daniel Evans, Simon Easterby, Regan King and Morgan Stoddart.

The youngsters shone as the players put them through their paces, with plenty of tips and advice given out at the training session.

Nick James from Newtown Rugby Club said: “It was absolutely brilliant to see top rugby stars from the Scarlets taking part in our training session. To see the looks on the faces of our junior members as the Scarlets walked down the hill to our training fields is something we’ll remember for years to come.

“This visit is exactly the type of motivation and inspiration that clubs like ours need to get young players keen to play and learn rugby and to attract new members.

“To play rugby with their heroes is such a great inspiration and the Scarlets players were great and joined in with lots of enthusiasm in all the skills sessions we were running.”

Scarlets captain, Mark Jones, originally from Builth Wells said: “We had a very warm welcome – it’s great to be out in the community talking to young players and encouraging them. We did a spot of talent spotting too, there were a couple of young players that looked very promising for the future!”

Rupert Moon, Commercial Director of the Scarlets who led the tour across Wales which included a trip to the Eisteddfod at Bala and then to Aberaeron RFC, said: “Our mission is to make supporting the Scarlets feel like being part of one big family. To be out and about is exactly what we need to do to spread that message and make people feel part of our rugby region by meeting our players and staff face-to-face.

REFEREES TRAINING DAYS JULY 2009

It is intended to hold two training days for Referees, from Level 1 inductees, current Level 2 and Level 3 referees, at
(1) Denbigh RFC Saturday 25th July, 2009 and
2) Bangor RFC Sunday 26th July 2009.

David R Davies will be at both days, which will be used as Training days for all referees.
The programme will include a discussion on the new laws and then training sessions for all referees in a game situation, so kit will be required, but there will be no fitness testing for Advisors and Observers.

We will provide food for those attending, so pass it on to any interested parties. Contact Merv Picton if you want to attend. It is planned to start the day at 10.00am and conclude at 16.00. Although the course attendance is not compulsory, it is felt strongly that support and involvement in Society activities is essential for all referees.

We require another ten active Level 2 referees this season to cover Promotions and Retirements. Thanks to all those who over the past years have given service to our game. Best wishes to them in their Boots Hanging Up time and a warm welcome to the Watchers Club.

Meeting Notes.

It is asked that all clubs hosting the trail days make both the changing rooms and training equipment available to the team manager or Head Coach by 10am on the morning of each session.

The province is still looking for a club to host the South V East match; any interested club should contact Dai Higgs.

Training sessions are to be based on a two on two off basis. To avoid players picking their attendance it will still remain a provincial rule that each player must attend both venues.

The playing kits for next season are to be supplied by the MWP strips of 2008/09. These are available at U12 and U14 and will be used until new funds are obtained. Note we are still short of an Under 13’s kit and this side will benefit with the fist GSC kit.

It has been asked for clubs to propose the provincial badge; any ideas should in the first instance go to Dai Higgs. The Sword of the Nation was one suggestion put forward.

The province is in great need of sponsorship manager/managers, someone who has a comprehensive list of good contacts within our area. At present Gogledd South will receive no central funding from North Wales or the WRU and as such we need to raise funds at every level. This role could be carried out by an individual or be split down to team by team basis.

Note: It is unsure if any reimbursement will be available to clubs hosting the provincial trails and or matches. Dai Higgs to investigate.

2009/10 Season.

Provincial games are to be played on the last Sunday of each month and as such club are requested not to arrange fixtures on that day or any other day during that weekend.

At U12 and 13’s there will be home and away fixtures against both Gogledd East and Gogledd West plus two development days and one match arranged by the provincial age grade team.

U14’s as above but with a selection tournament on the last Sunday in March to pick around 50 players for the Gogledd Cymru 2010/11 U15 squad.

At U 14’s they are also to take part in the Welsh provincial 10’s Tournament at the University of Glamorgan on Saturday 5th of September.

No central funding was available at this time and it would need to be a self sufficient province, to this end all are ask to seek sponsors to enable the running costs and playing kits to be covered.

The ideal management set up would be as follows and Dave asked if all willing applicants would contact him in the first instance. Team Manager, Head coach, 2 x Assistant Coaches and a Sponsorship Manager.

Incentives to fill the above posts could include a chance to proceed to the RAG coaching or management staff, exclusive CPD coaching nights, Gogledd Coaching sportswear, centrally funding course cost.

The large geographical area would lead itself to a two centre training base (each age group to decide club centres based on; suitability of area to player ratio, available equipment and ground facilities), it would be a prerequisite that squad members would have to attend both evenings to maintain his place within that squad.

It was stated that we are to target the U12’s 13’s and 14’s in the first instance and any further resources could then be allocated to the U15 & 16’s teams which are optional at present due to the limited number of coaches.
